In brief: before the age of one, a baby explores more than they play. Before 6 months, focus on sight and hearing: activity mat, stroller chain. From 6 to 12 months, choose things that can be grabbed and chewed: teething rings, activity plush toys. Budget €25 to €55 for the main gift and €12 to €20 for an extra.
Giving a Christmas gift to a baby under one year old is a unique challenge. They won't ask for anything, they won't know how to unwrap, and it's a safe bet that they will spend ten minutes on the wrapping paper before even looking at what was inside. That's okay. Before one year old, a baby doesn't play in the way we understand it: they explore. They look, they grab, they put things in their mouth, they shake. A good gift at this age is an object that supports this exploration at the right moment.
We have gathered twelve ideas here from our selection, organised by stage of development rather than by toy type. Because there is a world of difference between a two-month-old infant and an eleven-month-old baby who is starting to stand up.
What a baby under one year old really expects from a gift
Three criteria matter, and no more. First, the sense being stimulated: before six months, it's sight and hearing; then come touch and grasping. Next is safety: everything will end up in their mouth, without exception, so materials and standards are not just details. Finally, the lifespan: a well-chosen developmental toy often accompanies the baby for eight to twelve months, which completely changes the value for money.
What does not matter, however: the quantity of functions, the number of buttons, and batteries. An object that is too "talkative" does the work for the child.
Before 6 months: contrast, sound and touch
During this period, the baby discovers their environment primarily by observing. Their vision is developing, and it favours high contrasts. Their hands are barely opening. The most appropriate gifts are therefore those that come to them, rather than those they have to go out and get.
Melody musical activity mat, Konges Sløjd
This is our favourite in this selection, and the gift we most often recommend to parents-to-be. It attaches just as easily to a cot as it does to a playpen or floor mat, and its hanging elements give the baby a reason to reach out their arms long before they know how to grab. The musical aspect also helps with calm-down phases, which is no small feat around 5 pm.

Newborn stroller activity chain, Little Dutch
The discreet gift that no one thinks to put on their list, yet it saves many journeys. It attaches to the stroller, car seat or bouncer, and follows the baby everywhere. The natural tones of the Newborn range also make it an object you aren't embarrassed to leave attached permanently.
Price: €22.99. See the Newborn activity chain
Sensory stars, Little L
Small, soft and easy to grab even for a three-month-old's hand. Each branch offers a different texture, making it an excellent first manipulation object. It is also a very good idea if you are looking for a gift around fifteen euros to complement a larger present.
Price: €12.99 (available in blue and green). See all our sensory development toys
You can find all of our ideas for this period in the 0 to 6 months toys collection.
From 6 to 12 months: grabbing, chewing, making noise
The shift is clear. The baby grabs intentionally, passes objects from one hand to the other, hits, shakes and, above all, chews. Teething is starting, and with it, a very concrete need for firm things to gnaw on. It is also the moment when cause and effect fascinate them: I shake it, it makes a noise.
Wally the Watermelon, Oli & Carol
Oli & Carol is a small Barcelona-based company that works with natural hevea rubber, without holes or assembly, so there are no places where water or mould can settle. Wally goes from the play mat to the bath without transition and holds up very well to being chewed on for months.
Price: €19.90. Discover Wally the Watermelon
Lolaletost teething rings
A Spanish range entirely dedicated to miniature bakery items: croissant, pretzel, waffle, avocado toast. It's funny, very photogenic and, most importantly, the grip is designed for small hands that don't yet have much strength. A gift that makes parents smile as much as it keeps the baby occupied.
Price: from €17.95. See all our rattles and teething toys
Safari Friends Lion activity plush, Little Dutch
It brings together everything an eight-month-old loves in one place: rings to chew, a bell, crinkly paper, different textures. It's the kind of object that really occupies them for fifteen minutes, which at this age is a real feat.
Price: €24.95. See the Lion activity plush
Small lock board, Egmont Toys
This one is a bet on the future, and that is precisely what makes it a lovely Christmas gift. Around ten months, the baby starts to open and close doors; they will easily play with this board until they are two and a half. Egmont Toys is a Belgian company founded in 1921, and you can feel it in the wood finish.

The rest of our ideas for this age group can be found in the 6 to 12 months toys collection.
Comforters and soft toys, the safe bet that lasts
We sometimes push them aside, thinking they aren't original enough. That's a mistake. The comforter is often the only gift from this first year that will still be around in five years, and it is an object that plays a real role in building the child's emotional security.
Pink Flamingo flat comforter, Little Dutch
Flat format, very light, with a loop for a dummy. This is the comforter you can give from birth without a second thought, and the only gift on this list that we advise you to buy in duplicate.
Price: €13.95. See the Flamingo comforter
Safari Friends Lioness soft toy, Little Dutch
Seventeen centimetres, the ideal size for a car seat or a changing bag. Embroidery replaces plastic eyes, making it suitable from the very first weeks.

The gift we keep: books and keepsakes
There is a category of gifts that parents particularly appreciate at Christmas, and that we often forget: those that leave a trace.
La gazette des bébés, Bayard Jeunesse
A fabric book that crinkles, can be chewed on and is machine-washable. Several versions exist, including one dedicated to grannies and one to kisses, making it a very sweet gift for the grandparents to give.
Price: €15.90. See all our 0 to 1 year ideas
"Mes premières fois" stamping poster, Les Petites Dates
The Christmas gift for the parents as much as for the child. You stamp the date of each first time, from the first smile to the first steps. In ten years, this will be the object you bring out on every birthday.
Price: €39.00. Discover the Mes premières fois poster
Three traps to avoid when giving a gift to a baby
Giving too far in advance. A toy intended for 18 months given to a six-month-old baby will end up at the back of a cupboard, and will be forgotten by the day it would have been perfect. It is better to hit the mark, even if it means giving an object that seems simple.
Multiplying small gifts. A one-year-old baby faced with eight parcels will be overwhelmed in three minutes. One lovely gift, opened calmly, marks the day much more. It is also fairer on the bedroom, which is already overflowing.
Neglecting materials. Everything goes into the mouth during that year. Natural rubber, solid wood, certified cotton, water-based paints: these are concrete criteria, not marketing points.
At Maison Canailles, we love gifts that don't shout. The ones you place on the rug without an instruction manual, and that let the child decide what to do with them.
What budget to plan for a first-year Christmas gift
For a main gift, count on between 25 and 55 euros: this is the range in which most quality developmental toys, mats included, are found. For a small extra present, or if you are giving to several children, the 12 to 20 euro bracket is more than enough at this age and covers rattles, comforters and teething rings.
If you are looking to balance several gifts, our small budgets collection gathers everything that falls below this threshold.
Frequently asked questions
What Christmas gift should I give a 3-month-old baby?
At three months, the baby watches and listens much more than they handle things. Opt for an activity mat, a stroller activity chain or an object with high visual contrast. Toys to grab will come a little later, around four or five months.
Is it worth giving a gift to a baby who doesn't understand Christmas?
The baby doesn't understand the celebration, that's true. But the gift will be used for months. And for many families, this first Christmas is a moment that is photographed and talked about for a long time. It is not a wasted gift.
How do I know if a toy is suitable and safe for under 1 year old?
Three checks are enough: the age indication provided by the manufacturer, the absence of small detachable parts, and the nature of the materials, since everything will end up in the mouth. On each of our product pages, the recommended age, materials and standards are stated explicitly.
What gift should I give for the first birthday instead of Christmas?
Around one year old, the child stands up and starts to walk. Push or pull toys, first shape sorters and motor skills toys then come into their own. You will find them in our 1 to 2 years gifts selection.
To go further
Our entire selection dedicated to this first year is gathered in the 0 to 1 year gifts collection. If you are looking for a present for a recent birth instead, head over to our birth gifts. And if you are still hesitating, the Maison Canailles gift card leaves the choice to the parents, which is sometimes the loveliest gift of all.
To see how the child's needs evolve afterwards, step by step, read our guide which toy to give by age, from birth to 4 years. And if the child is a little older, our Christmas guides for 1 to 2 year olds and for 3 to 4 year olds take over.
