In brief: a good birth gift makes the first few weeks easier, supports baby's development for several months, or keeps a record of their first year. Avoid newborn-sized clothing and toys that are too advanced. Plan on €10 to €25 for an acquaintance, €25 to €50 for a friend, and more for close family.
The best birth gift is one that the parents haven't already received three times over. In practice, it should fulfil one of these three wishes: making the first few weeks easier, supporting baby's development for several months, or keeping a record of this time that goes by so quickly. Everything else, especially newborn-sized clothing, has a good chance of being a duplicate.
We have selected ten ideas from our collection, classified by these three wishes, for budgets ranging from 7 to 70 euros.
What makes a good birth gift
Before you choose, three simple questions will help you avoid most mistakes.
- Will it be used before six months? A toy designed for 18 months will sit in a cupboard for a long time, and the parents will have forgotten about it by the time it would have been perfect.
- Can it withstand being chewed on and put in the washing machine? Everything the baby grabs ends up being chewed. Materials and ease of care count for more than the number of features.
- Will it fit in? New parents are often short on space. A compact object that hangs up or stores easily will be appreciated more than a large, bulky toy.
Gifts useful from the first few weeks
These are the ones whose value you realise at three in the morning. While less spectacular at the moment of opening, these are often the ones for which you are thanked for the longest.
The soothing rabbit, Moonie
A 28 cm plush toy made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, which hides a seven-colour nightlight and pink noise, that continuous sound that helps many babies settle. Its cry detector automatically restarts the sound when the baby wakes up. It is the most generous gift in this selection, and often the one that gets used the most.
Price: €70.00 (also available in a teddy bear version and in cappuccino colour). Discover the Moonie soothing rabbit
The Bear Brave pacifier comfort blanket, Jollein
A 23 cm flat comfort blanket with a loop for a pacifier: the baby keeps their blanket within reach, and the pacifier stops ending up on the floor. Low price, high utility, and it is typically the kind of item that parents end up buying a second one of.
Price: €9.99. See the Bear Brave comfort blanket
Developmental gifts that will be used all year round
Before three months, babies watch and listen. Around four months, their hands open and they start grabbing things. These gifts support this progression and remain useful well after birth.
The Tiny Farm Tummy Time sensory mirror, Done by Deer
Early childhood professionals recommend placing the baby on their tummy for a few minutes each day, when they are awake and under supervision. Many newborns don't like it at first. This tilting mirror gives them a reason to lift their head: they observe themselves, and the rattle, bell and crinkle paper do the rest. It measures 33 x 19 cm and can be used from birth.
Price: €43.95. Discover the Tiny Farm sensory mirror
The Woolly activity triangle, Jollein
A firm fabric developmental toy that stands up on its own on the playmat. Each side offers a different material or pattern: boucle teddy, lambs, moon, bird, and a little barn door that opens with Velcro. It follows the baby from the playmat to the sitting position.
Price: €34.99. See the Woolly activity triangle
The grape bunch rattle, Oli & Carol
Made of natural hevea rubber, the iconic material of this small Barcelona brand, it is as good for chewing as it is for shaking, and produces a soft sound, far from the clicking rattles. It also comes as an ear of corn or a watermelon, perfect for putting together a little market basket for parents with a sense of humour.
Price: €23.90. Discover the grape bunch rattle
The knitted giraffe rattle, Jollein
The perfect small gift to go with a card, or when giving as a group. Knitted, lightweight, mounted on an easy-to-grip ring, with subtle bells. Also available in a bear version.
Price: €8.99. See the giraffe rattle
All our toys designed for the first few months are gathered in the 0 to 6 months toys collection, and our rattles in rattles and teething toys.
The plush toy that might become "the" comfort toy
You don't choose a child's comfort toy: they decide for themselves, often around eight or ten months. But giving a cute plush toy from birth gives it a chance to be chosen.
The Fairy Garden Fawn activity plush, Little Dutch
A soft fawn that hides several surprises: a crinkling butterfly on the shoulder, a small mirror under a hoof, and rings to grab around the leg. It keeps the baby occupied well beyond simple cuddling.
Price: €24.99. Discover the Fawn plush toy
Keepsake gifts: the ones we hold onto
These aren't just for playing. They are the ones that parents will bring out ten years from now with a little tug at the heartstrings.
My big collection of lullabies, Milan
A sound book that gathers lullabies to listen to and sing. It becomes part of the bedtime ritual from the first weeks, and many parents find tunes from their own childhoods in it.
Price: €20.90. See the lullaby collection
My first year photo album, Milan
An album to fill in month by month: first photos, first times, and all those little anecdotes we think we'll never forget but which fade so quickly. Small price, great sentimental value.
Price: €6.90. Discover the My first year album
The "Happiest of Dads" baby gazette, Bayard Jeunesse
A fabric book in newspaper format that recounts the daily life of young fathers with humour. Baby crinkles and chews on it, Dad reads it. It's a nice way to think of him, as he is often forgotten in the midst of the gifts.
Price: €15.90. See the Dad gazette
For parents who love keepsakes, the My first times stamping poster from Petites Dates is also a safe bet. We present it in detail in our Christmas guide for 0 to 1 year olds.
Birth gifts to avoid
Newborn-sized clothing. The baby will wear them for two or three weeks, sometimes never if they were born big. If you really want to give clothing, aim for 6 or 12 months instead.
Toys that are too advanced. A large play kitchen or a bike for a newborn is a gift for three years from now, and clutter right now.
Childcare gear chosen instead of the parents. Pushchair, car seat, cot: these are very personal choices, often made before birth. It is better to contribute to a registry or give a gift card.
At Maison Canailles, we love birth gifts that don't try to impress. The ones that make a night a little sweeter, or that keep a record of a first year that goes by too fast.
What budget should you plan for a birth gift?
There is no rule, but customs are fairly stable. Between 10 and 25 euros for a colleague, neighbour or acquaintance: a rattle, a pacifier comfort blanket or a book fit perfectly. Between 25 and 50 euros for a friend or relative: a developmental toy like the mirror or the activity triangle. Beyond that, for close family or a group gift: the soothing rabbit, or an assortment of several small gifts.
Our small budget collection gathers all our ideas under 20 euros.
Frequently asked questions
When should you give a birth gift?
In the weeks following the birth, ideally during a first visit. If you cannot visit, sending it within the first month is still perfectly acceptable. Some also prefer to give during the pregnancy, at a baby shower.
Should you give a gift for the baby or for the parents?
Both work. An object useful in daily life, like the soothing rabbit, relieves the parents as much as it accompanies the baby. And if the family already has an older child, a small gift for them is always appreciated.
What birth gift should you give when you don't know the parents well?
Stick to a neutral, compact and useful item: a rattle, a pacifier comfort blanket or a fabric book. Avoid clothing, where tastes vary greatly, and overly personal objects.
What gift should you give for a second birth?
Parents often already have the essentials. Favour a keepsake item unique to this new baby, like the first year album, or a gift for the older sibling who is becoming a big brother or big sister.
To go further
Our entire selection is gathered in the birth gifts collection. To anticipate the months that follow, our guide which toy to give according to age, from birth to 4 years details each step. If the baby is celebrating their first Christmas this year, our Christmas guide for 0 to 1 year olds takes over. And if you are still hesitating, the Maison Canailles gift card lets the parents choose.
